How to get your foreign diploma recognised in the Netherlands: A guide for Expats

June 12, 2025 by admin Blog, Career Coaching, Career planning, Diploma 0 comments

If you’re an expat planning to work or study in the Netherlands, having your foreign diploma recognised or evaluated is often an essential step. The process varies depending on your profession and purpose (employment, further education, or regulated professions such as healthcare). Here’s a clear overview of where and how to get your qualifications assessed.

IDW / Nuffic: general diploma evaluation

    • Best for: Most expats seeking employment in the Netherlands.
    • What they do: IDW (International Credential Evaluation) works with Nuffic to provide official diploma evaluations. This service compares your foreign diploma to Dutch education levels.
    • Outcome: A formal evaluation document indicating the Dutch equivalent of your diploma.
    • How to apply: Submit your request via the IDW website.
    • Website:  www.idw.nl

DUO: for access to Dutch education

    • Best for: Expats who want to continue studying in the Dutch education system.
    • What they do: DUO assesses your credentials to determine if you meet the entry requirements for Dutch schools or universities.
    • Website:  www.duo.nl

BIG register: for regulated healthcare professions

    • Best for: Doctors, nurses, physiotherapists, and other healthcare professionals.
    • What they do: The BIG register ensures that healthcare professionals meet the necessary qualifications and standards to practise in the Netherlands.
    • Note: You may also need to pass language and professional knowledge exams.
